Sundaram Medical Foundation is a leading Post Graduate teaching hospital
with State-of-the-art facilities, located in Chennai.

Membership of the Royal College Emergency Medicine

Dr. Rangarajan Memorial Hospital, Sundaram Medical Foundation (SMF) is a 200 bedded private, not for profit, trust hospital with state-of-art facilities, serving the community of Anna Nagar within the city of Chennai. The SMF Emergency Department (ED) is a 15-bed unit offering the full spectrum of services. SMF was one of the first hospitals in the country to recognize the need for a round-the-clock unit for managing emergencies. It is one of the earliest structured EDs in the country.

The ED provides acute treatment for a wide range of conditions - traffic accidents, burns, poisonings, surgical emergencies and acute medical emergencies. Thrombolysis for heart attack and stroke is done in the ED. SMF handles adults and children, on a "24/7" basis. About 30% of all admissions to the hospital come through the ED. We see close to 30,000 patients a year. There are 2 well equipped ambulances with trained paramedics to support the ED. The ED is well equipped with Multi para monitors in all beds, Defibrillators, Ventilator and NIV / CPAP / BIPAP machines. Point of care tests such as ABG, ECG, ECHO, USG and Cardiac Enzymes are available within the Emergency for quick decision making in the department.

The ED at SMF gives you an opportunity to prepare yourself for an exciting career in the field of Emergency Medicine! Staffed by qualified emergency physicians & trained nurses, the SMF Emergency Department is a premier academic center. Giving a wide & supervised exposure to all emergency cases, the department is the right place for an aspiring doctor to transform into an emergency physician. SMF offers a three-year training program in Emergency Medicine enabling one to gain the reputed MEM / CCT - EM (SEMI) and/or MRCEM (UK) qualification.

Successful completion of the program and all parts of the examination will result in being awarded the MEM / CCT - EM (SEMI) and/or MRCEM (UK) degree. This gives the opportunity to practice as a qualified Emergency Physician, both in India and abroad. The MRCEM - UK (Membership of the Royal College of Emergency Medicine – United Kingdom) is an internationally recognized certification given by the Royal College of Emergency Medicine, UK. MRCEM (UK) is recognized by the Medical Council of India, and students can register this additional qualification. A successful candidate can register with the General Medical Council (GMC) in the UK without need for writing PLAB. Most of our alumni are pursuing illustrious careers in the UK.
